Thorn Protection

For my 2008 ride, when thorns became a problem I switched to Specialized Thorn Resistant Tubes (700x28/40 Presta). For my 2010 ride, I stuck with standard tubes but added a tire liner (Stop Flats 2 / Red).

Electronics

For my 2008 ride, I used a Blackjack II (with LJMobile and Google Maps) for communications and pictures, and a Sony Reader PRS-505 for reading. For my 2010 ride, I used an iPhone 3G in place of both devices.

Gear Arrangement

The frame pump was mounted on the bottom side of the down tube, while the two water bottle cages (each with one water bottle) were mounted on the top sides of the seat tube and the down tube. The handlebar bag was used to provide easy access to the flashlight, bicycle lock, and phone. The hydration pack was used for my identification, cash, the cycling jacket, and the stuff sack containing the other waterproof clothing. The two straps were used to secure the sleeping pad to the top of the rear rack. Everything else went into the two rear panniers, with heavier items toward the bottom.
